Surface Pro 3: Understanding the Hardware in Each Version. While Surface Pro 3 falls short of offering a true configurator for mixing and matching components during the online purchase process, it still provides more options than any previous Surface device. This time around, you can choose between product editions with different CPUs that span the range of Intel's Core mobile processor lineup. Which makes the most sense for you? If you're familiar with previous Surface devices, you know that Surface RT and Surface 2—both of which are based on ARM chipsets—each offered only minimal configuration choices: Your only real choice was whether to get the 3. GB or 6. 4 GB version of the product. The original Surface Pro was similar, though that product offered both 6. GB and 1. 28 GB versions at first. Explore the world of Mac. The University of California Small Farm Program and UC Cooperative Extension advisors in four California. For Surface Pro 2, Microsoft expanded the possibilities greatly: With this version there were/are four product versions offering a choice between 6. GB, 1. 28 GB, 2. 56 GB and 5. GB of storage. And the two upper range versions offered 8 GB of RAM, compared to 4 GB on the two lower- end versions. With Surface Pro 3, the firm takes the next logical step and finally offers microprocessor changes across what is now five available product editions. But each component deserves at least a slightly longer explanation. Or a lot longer, in the case of the CPUs. To the average user, this stuff doesn't matter too much, but if you have specific needs, understanding which processors are available and how they compare to each other—and to the processor types in competing devices—is at least somewhat relevant. Each is a 4th generation Intel Core . These are ultra- low- voltage (ULV) parts with dual cores and Hyper- Threading that utilize a 2. Each includes an integrated Intel HD Graphics chipset, which varies from processor to processor. There is no dedicated graphics option on any Surface Pro 3 model and perhaps that is something we'll see added in a future generation Surface. Here's how the processor models break down per product edition: Entry- level. The entry level Surface Pro 3 model offers a dual- core Intel Core i. Y processor with Intel HD Graphics 4. It offers a clock speed of 1. GHz. Mid- level. The two mid- level Surface Pro 3 models both offer the same dual- core Intel Core i. U processor with Intel HD Graphics 4. It offers a base speed of 1. GHz with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 2. GHz. High- end. The two high- end Surface Pro 3 models both offer the same Intel Core i. U processor with with Intel HD Graphics 5. It offers a base speed of 1. GHz with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3. GHz. As you might surmise from these numbers, each model represents a fairly significant performance boost over its preceding model's chipset, thanks in part to higher Turbo Boost possibilities, but also the bump in integrated graphics capabilities. It is worth noting, too, that none of these chipsets are particularly new: Each dates back to early 2. Surface Pro 2. In fact, the mid- level offering is identical to what Microsoft provided with Surface Pro 2. For the first time, at least that I'm aware of, the Intel Core- based Surface Pro 3 lineup supports Connected Standby—or what is now annoyingly called Instant. Go—meaning that if you use the device with the default Balanced power plan, you will see the same quick sleep and resume performance—and background software updating while the device power- sips while sleeping—that you can get with Intel Atom- and ARM- based systems. In day to day use, the average user won't notice any performance issues at all, but they will notice that Surface Pro 3 sleeps and resumes nearly instantaneously, which is of course a good thing. But as Johnathan Gabriel—a noted Surface fan and the artist behind Penny Arcade—just noted in a blog post, if you're doing heavy graphics work, you will almost certainly want to get a higher- end, i. Surface Pro 3. I suspect the power management stuff has as much to do with his performance issues as does the chipset. If you don't mind nixing Connected Standby/Instant. Go, you can of course simply switch from Balanced to some other plan in Power Options. I've not tried this, but I think I might do so to test the differences. My guess is that this could dramatically reduce battery life, however. It will certainly spin up the fan more often. Second, it's perhaps useful to compare the processors offered here with what Apple offers in its competing products. They are, after all, the benchmarks. For Mac. Book Air, Apple offers a 1. GHz dual- core Intel Core i. Turbo Boost speeds up to 2. GHz, configurable to a 1. GHz dual- core Intel Core i. Without looking up the model numbers, the clock speeds alone tell us that those are slightly lower- end parts that the corresponding Surface Pro 3 chips. But they're comparable. For the 1. 3- inch Mac. Book Pro, Apple offers higher- end chips: a 2. GHz dual- core Intel Core i. Turbo Boost up to 2. GHz) up to 2. 6. GHz dual- core Intel Core i. Turbo Boost up to 3. GHz). Again, without looking up the model numbers, it's clear that these are significantly more powerful than what's offered in Surface Pro 3. Maybe I'm oversimplifying things here, but I'd say that while the Surface Pro 3 is architecturally a lot closer to the Mac. Book Air than the Mac. Book Pro, it also sits somewhat between the two Apple products from a specs perspective. Certainly, Surface Pro 3 . This is the same RAM that Apple uses in its Mac. Book Air lineup, but is slightly different than the DDR3. L RAM that Apple uses in its Mac. Book Pro line. I'm not a hardware/RAM expert, but my understanding is that the LPDDR3 RAM used by Surface Pro 3 and Mac. Book Air is designed for devices that required advanced power management capabilities, whereas DDR3. L uses slightly more power and is a bit less efficient. Instead, it perhaps fairer to say that Surface Pro 3, like Apple's products and so many other competitors, utilizes some form of onboard, non- upgradeable/replaceable solid state storage. The various storage allotments are clearly defined and easily understood. What's more important here, I think, is the bugaboo that was raised sometime during the lifetime of the original Surface RT and Surface 2/Pro 2: Available disk space. That is, each device comes with some stated amount of onboard storage, but because Windows and whatever other software takes up a big chunk of it, the space available to the user is always quite a bit less than that reported amount. Thanks to a variety of factors, Surface Pro 3 has more available disk space than the corresponding Surface Pro 2 models. A big part of this is the improvements in Windows 8. Update 1, of course. But it's not just Windows, of course: Microsoft also bundles a bit of additional software on the device, like the Office 2. Free disk space breaks down like so: 6. GB of storage: 3. GB of free disk space. GB of storage: 9. GB of free disk space. GB of storage: 2. GB of free disk space. GB of storage: 4. GB of free disk space Which one would I get? While I applaud the additional product editions in Surface Pro 3, this product line obviously needs to mature to the point where customers can use a real configurator to add and remove components at purchase time. For example, I'd like the higher- end i. GB of RAM, which I feel are a bit more future- proof, but don't need more than 1. GB of storage. Such a device is not available for purchase today. Given that, and my own needs, I feel like the sweet spot of the Surface lineup is with the i. And if I were putting my own money down, I'd probably go with the second model—the Intel Core i. GB of RAM and 1. 28 GB of solid state storage—despite a few misgivings about the RAM in particular. That would set me back $1. Type Cover—see Surface Pro 3: Let's Talk About the Price for a discussion on that important aspect of the device—which isn't unreasonable for a PC of this caliber. Or would I? Honestly, given the quality of this device, I could see docking it and using it as a desktop replacement. In such as case, I'd go with the fourth model—the Intel Core i. GB of RAM and 2. 56 GB of solid state storage—for $1. That's $5. 00 more expensive, but again, is not bad for what that is, assuming fan noise isn't an issue and that ULV chipset is strong enough for my virtualization needs. So many questions. But this is early days, and your needs will of course differ from mine. Internally, however, it has a faster processor, architecture, graphics, and RAM. Little has changed in the design of the Apple Mac. Book Air, launched in its current form in late 2. Early 2. 01. 5 form this spring. There are still two screen sizes from which to choose, 1. Mac. Book Air specification in every other aspect is identical between models. But wait, is it really? In fact this time around there is an important internal difference that puts clear space between the two sizes of Air models in performance terms. In short, the 1. 3- inch notebook has a flash drive that is three times faster than the best the Windows world can deliver. The 1. 1- inch meanwhile remains only 5. Windows laptops, more on this below. Let's focus first on where they overlap. All Mac. Book Air notebooks are based on the same platform taking identical processor, graphics, memory and wireless adaptors. They also share the same port and connector layout, namely two USB 3. Mag. Safe 2 power connector; 3. SDXC card slot. In addition, all Mac. Book Air (Early 2. Thunderbolt 2, a single port here specified to 2. Gb/s in place of the original standard’s 2x 1. Gb/s. The processor du jour is from the fifth- generation of the Intel Core i. Broadwell – which comprises what the chip maker calls a . That is, a shrink of the microarchitecture from the 2. Haswell and Ivy Bridge series, to the new record- breaking die size of 1. As standard 2. 01. Mac. Book Air series takes a 1. GHz Intel Core i. U dual- core processor, able to automatically overclock to 2. GHz on demand through Intel Turbo Boost technology. Optionally you can configure any model with a 2. GHz Intel Core i. U (3. 2 GHz Turbo) dual- core processor, for an additional . More on the processor below. Memory is the same as last season, with 4 GB DDR3 RAM clocked at 1. MHz, configurable at time of purchase only to 8 GB, for an extra . Note that Apple has maintained the same low- power memory chips, even though Broadwell processors can take advantage of slightly faster 1. MHz memory – an opportunity that has already been taken with the Early 2. Mac. Book Pro with Retina display. We would guess the 1. MHz memory was preserved for the Air for reasons of budget, both financial and battery economy. Mac. Book Air (early 2. When it comes to storage, we find a remarkable breakthrough in storage technology. The Mac. Book Air was the first mainstream notebook computer to take advantage of a more direct PCI Express attachment for its solid- state flash drive with the Mid- 2. Mac. Book Pro with Retina display didn’t catch up until its refresh later that year in October 2. That first PCIe- attached flash drives broke records for their incredible sequential transfer speeds, no longer held back by the constriction of the ageing Serial ATA Revision 3. PCIe- attached flash drives allowed speeds to jump from around 5. MB/s under SATA to greater than 7. MB/s. That 5. 0 percent improvement was the biggest lift in storage performance since the hard disk became sidelined in favour of solid- state storage. For the 1. 3- inch Mac. Book Air, Apple has provided the same upgrade as the 1. Mac. Book Pro with Retina display, by doubling the number of PCIe data lanes from two to four. In our tests this allowed a two- fold increase in maximum sequential read speed over the last version, with a top speed now exceeding 1. MB/s. For small file transfers, we measured 4 k. B random reads and writes at 3. MB/s; and using data sized from 4 k. B to 1. 02. 4 k. B we saw incredibly high averaged figures of 4. MB/s. Highest sequential write speeds approached 7. MB/s, averaging 6. MB/s for 2- 1. 0 MB data, while sequential read speeds averaged 1. MB/s. 1. 3- inch Mac. Book Air (early 2. The speed of the processor in the Mac. Book Air range (all Mac. Book Airs share the same processor as standard) has been bumped from 1. GHz: not a huge improvement, but potentially more significant than the Mac. Book Pro's increase from 2. GHz because in lower- specced machines processing power is more likely to become the performance bottleneck. As in the new Pro, these are Intel's new fifth- gen Broadwell chips so they should be more power- efficient too - although it's hard to get too excited about Apple managing to keep battery life at the same (admittedly excellent) level rather than improving it. We tested the standard issue Mac. Book Air with its 1. GHz Core i. 5 processor. As an indication of raw processor and memory speed, the Geekbench 3 benchmark test scored the 1. Mac. Book Air with 2. That puts it 4. 9 and 7. Mid- 2. 01. 4 model with its 1. GHz Haswell- generation processor (2. In Cinebench 1. 1. Air scored 1. 1. 8 and 2. Mac. Book Air. But it was Cinebench 1. Broadwell dividend, moving from 9. That’s a 1. 3. 4 and 8. Any increase in performance is likely from the small uplift in processor clock frequency though, rather than optimisations to the processor pipeline, for instance, as we’d experience in a . Remember, the process shrink of Broadwell is more about reducing wasted heat by increasing processor efficiency. Mac. Book Air (early 2. This year’s Mac. Book Air gains an Intel HD Graphics 6. GPU, replacing last year's HD Graphics 5. The stronger graphics setup lead us to expect this year's Airs to be better gaming machines, indeed, according to i. Fixit's calculations, we expected 2. Intel HD Graphics 5. Now we have spent some time with a review sample we are able to confirm our own findings - it wasn't as impressive as we had hoped. The Intel HD Graphics 6. Mac. Book Air is an integrated GPU, piggybacked on the Core i. U main processor. This has a 5. 0 percent higher baseline clock speed (3. MHz versus the 2. MHz of HD Graphics 5. MHz, when compared to the 1. GHz of the last chip. Execution units have also been increased in the . Using the Batman: Arkham City benchmark test, both last year’s and the new 2. Mac. Book Air averaged 2. Medium detail); and 2. High detail. In the Tomb Raider 2. Normal detail selected, the 2. Air averaged 2. 2 fps while the 2. Air played at 2. 1 fps. Moving up to the laptop’s native resolution of 1. Normal detail the new Mac. Book Air averaged 1. So not only is there no net improvement apparent here with the new graphics chipset, but we see a tiny loss in gaming performance. It’s possible that the performance shortfall in the Early 2. Yosemite now against last year’s better optimised 1. Mavericks. Or Apple may be applying new GPU power- saving schemes to reduce heat and battery drain. Turning to other graphics benchmarks, Unigine Heaven returned effectively the same results between machines (1. Medium), while the Open. GL tests in Cinebench did show a small benefit for the new Mac. Book Air. In Cinebench 1. Cinebench 1. 5 returned the only appreciable change in framerate, a notable jump from 1. Mac. Book Air (early 2. Display/screen. The Airs still aren't Retina- class: like the mid- 2. Mac. Book Air, the early- 2. Air has a 1. 3. 3- inch (diagonal) LED- backlit glossy widescreen display with a resolution of 1. That's pretty low on the sharpness scale by today's standards (for comparison, the 1. Retina Mac. Book Pro has a pixel density of 2. Retina or better displays may find the Air a touch fuzzy, although it certainly isn't a bad screen. We do think Apple will add a Retina display option to the Air line- up at some point in the near future, but we don't get that upgrade here. Here's what you need to know about the 1. Mac. Book Air: The 1. LCD screen of the Mac. Book Air has the same core specification listed as the last few models – a 1. TN) technology. This type of screen has poor off- axis viewability and restricted colour gamut, but is chosen for its low cost and reduced power requirement when compared to the higher- performance IPS technology used on i. Phone, i. Pad and Mac. Book Pro with Retina display. We didn’t have the Mid- 2. Mac. Book Air to compare alongside to spot any subjective visual differences, but from memory the new Air screen did not look conspicuously any better or worse. We ran some basic tests to see if its lab measurements had changed, and discovered a reduced contrast ratio of 4. Mid- 2. 01. 4 version of the 1. Mac. Book Air. Colour gamut was also reported with a lower figure, now 4. RGB and 3. 1 percent Adobe. RGB, where last year’s Air measured at 6. Colour accuracy was reported as better though, with an average Delta E figure of 5. Delta E of last year’s model. The differences could be explained by the use of a display from a different manufacturer, rather than a general decline in component quality – like most manufacturers, Apple will source from different OEM suppliers, each of whose product may differ slightly in specification and performance.
